Our Guide: What to Wear to a Holiday Party
Now that Halloween is behind us, we’re diving head first into those two months collectively known as “the holidays.” From basically mid-November through New Year’s Eve, it feels like there’s a near-constant crush of event invitations. Whether your schedule this season involves family gatherings, charity galas or just the quintessential office holiday party, we’ve got your style guide covered.
In the slideshow ahead, we’ve created five pretty and festive looks that will work for any holiday party on your calendar this year.
The Right Kind of Shine
We love shine—as long as its done right. Midi-length pleated skirts are still very much in style, so carrying the trend into the holidays is easy. We love this affordable version from Zara ($70), especially when paired with a luxe cashmere sweater in a deep burgundy color. The combination is festive without being obnoxious. Easy finishing touches for a look like this (that can easily be mixed and matched throughout the season) include classic black suede pumps (they go with everything), a sweet metallic mini bag and some fun earrings.
Keep your makeup pretty and simple and pull your hair back in a low bun to show off your face-framing earrings.
Embrace The Velvet Trend
Words can’t quite describe how much we’re loving the velvet trend lately, as evidenced by how often it popped up in our fall fashion stories. Sure, a slinky, skinny-strap dress like this might not work for every figure (if you’re shy about your arms or your chest), but just try layering it over a fitted black turtleneck (or bodysuit). Add a pair of heeled ankle boots and a cool, bohemian bag and you’ve got a romantic look that’s perfect for a casual holiday get-together.
A Little Faux Fur
This look is a great option for a holiday party where you might need to look a dash professional, like your office party (or that of your significant other). We’d recommend a pair of cool wide-leg trousers paired with pumps (to lengthen your legs and keep the pants from drowning your whole look). Then tuck in a sophisticated top like this amazingly affordable Uniqlo sleeveless sweater, and then drape a glam faux fur around your neck.
Mix Textures With Abandon!
Have some dressier events on your calendar this season? Good! Now is your excuse to go girly with a dark twist. We love a deep wine color as an alternative to red, which can often look a bit jarring if not worn right. A faux fur coat makes an excellent topper that can be worn again and again—and places like Zara and H&M have plenty of affordable options. For a touch of festive flare, an embroidered velvet bag adds a mix of texture with lace and fur for a fun and playful combination that works.
Get Festive in a Matched Set
Finally, for the most adventurous dressers among us—try a matched set! This trend really took off a few years ago, and thanks to a gorgeous collaboration between J. Crew and Drakes—it’s also merged with the pajama dressing trend. This top and pants set is adorned with a vintage unicorn print that has a medieval, almost royal vibe to it. Wear the shirt open as a jacket, by layering it over a silk tank top.
To make sure people know you didn’t just roll out of bed and show up, break out your dressiest patent leather pumps and plenty of sparkling, oversized jewelry. A structured, sophisticated bag seals the deal. With a look like this you’re guaranteed to be the best-dressed at any holiday party.
