Looking Your Best From the Neck Up

For most guys, aside from your overall physical health, a well-maintained head of hair and a clean, irritation free shave have the biggest impact on how you look.  Your face and hair, even more than what you are wearing, are the first things people notice about you (unless, of course, you are wearing someting outlandish).  These are my tips for looking your best from the neck up.

Get a Great Haircut

Of course, the first step in getting the best haircut possible to finding a great barber or stylist in the first place!   Finding a new barber or stylist, especially if you’ve just moved to a new town, can be a hassle. If you’re not new to town and you need to fire your barer or stylist, you are in the same boat!  You’re likely to end up with a few bad experiences (and maybe some bad haircuts) along the way. The best way to find a new barber or stylist is to ask around — find a guy with a great haircut and ask him where ge got it.  Next, go in for a trim (not a full-on makeover).

If the trim turns out badly, your whole look won’t be ruined and you can go someplace else to have it fixed.  Don’t rely on review sites such as Yelp as anyone can post reviews — the best method of finding a barber or stylist is to ask people you know.  You can also search Instagram and Facebook to see the work of barbers and stylists in your area.  I just searched for “Los Angeles Barbers” and came across dozens of people in my city.

When going in for a haircut, many guys will simply sit down and say something like, “take an inch off” and then leave it up to the person cutting his hair to make the choice for him.  That’s fine for some guys, but it doesn’t always lead to getting the best possible haircut.  Often guys will leave frustrated with a haircut they don’t really like.  Getting the best possible result out of your trip to the barbershop or salon involves several things — like knowing what to ask for, communication, and how you treat the person cutting your hair.  To improve your chances of getting the best possible haircut,  it is important to know what you want and listen to your barber or stylists’ suggestions.

Naturally, knowing the the best hairstyle for your face shape before going in is critical.  To find the right hairstyles for your face shape, it’s important to know your shape in the first place — this is essential to getting the best haircut possible. The right haircut can enhance your best features and downplay your weaknesses.  While your barber or stylist can help you determine face shape and create a hairstyle that compliments your shape and features, the guidelines below will help give you some insight on things to consider before going to the salon and how to choose the right hairstyle for your face shape. Let’s take a look at face shapes and adjustments which can be made to the haircut to provide balance and enhance your look.   A guy with a round face should stay away from round hairstyles which will further enhance the roundness, while a guy with a long face should opt for a style which is fuller to provide balance.

Stay on Top of Trends

I’ve got this client who always wants to stay one step ahead of the trends and knows just how to pull off a trendy look at work. He’s always scouring the pages of magazines and the internet looking for that trendy men’s haircut. I know he’s not the only one. There are lots of guys who like to maintain a fresh look and stay one step ahead of the pack. But where do you look for emerging trends in men’s hair? Look to the streets — see what styles guys in the bigger cities are wearing.  Trends tend to start in the U.K. and make their way over to Los Angeles and New York a few years later, so if you want to stay slightly ahead, pick up a copy of a British men’s fashion magazine for inspiration.

Keep Your Scalp Healthy

Once you’ve gotten a great haircut,  keeping your scalp healthy is critical.   There’s no such thing as healthy hair. Hair is basically protein and has no nervous system or blood supply and, as such, does not have reparative properties. The scalp, on the other hand, does. Since your hair is an extension of the scalp, it makes sense that a healthy scalp helps ensure healthy looking hair. For keeping that scalp healthy, follow these quick and easy scalp care tips for men.  Wash your hair daily using a gentle shampoo, exfoliate your scalp  weekly, and always massage your scalp regularly to promote circulation to the scalp.  To avoid drying out the scalp, avoid water that is too hot and turn down the head on the blow dryer.

Shave the Right Way

Nearly every time I give a client a shave in my barber salon, the guy almost always says something like, “I wish I could give myself a shave like this at home.” In reality, it is quite simple to get a barbershop quality shave every morning in the privacy of your own bathroom. Learning how to shave properly is also key to maintaining your look — your face is the first thing people notice about you, so it’s important to shave the right way.    Always prep your face by shaving after a shower (the warm water softens the beard) and apply a pre-shave oil and quality shaving cream.   Make sure to shave using a razor with a fresh blade, holding the skin taut while gently gliding the razor over your face.  Always shave with the direction of the hair growth and only shave against the grain should you require a closer shave.   After shaving, splash your face with cool water to close the pores and apply a great after-shave balm to moisten and protect your skin.
